Report on the Workshop conducted in commemoration of the 51st anniversary of Eritrean peoples launching of the liberation armed struggle and the 11th year of the detained political leaders and journalists
The Eritrean partnership for democratic change comprising political, civic and independent activists have organized a workshop on 29th September 2012in commemoration of the 51st anniversary
of the Eritrean peoples liberation armed struggle and the 11th year of the detention of the political leaders and journalists.
The first session was devoted to joint speeches commemorating the Eritrean people’s political struggle and its transfer to armed struggle after all peaceful political solutions failed.
The workshop was moderated by Mr. Alazar Hagos leadership member of the partnership. Mr. Alazar welcomed the participants and introduced the events agenda to the audience.
The first session of the event was devoted by delivering speeches both the launching of the Armed Struggle and the 18th September of 2001 where the first democratic opening was muzzled by the dictator in Eritrea by imprisoning member government officials and journalists.
Mehari Abraham- TV Zete editor and reporter and member of the Eritrean Journalists in Exile presented a long speech on the day when this dark incident has taken place on 18th September in 2001. He has explained the background and the root causes of the imprisoning of those who appealed for democratic change in Eritrea. He further explained in detail how TV Zete has worked to find out the realities about these criminal acts of the regime.
Fessehaye Hagos member of the partnership read the joint speech commemorating the launching of the Eritrean Peoples armed liberation struggle. The joint speech assessed the process of the armed struggle how it started and why it was transferred from peaceful political struggle to armed struggle. The letters message was reawakening the Eritrean people to fight for their human rights and freedoms against the home made dictatorial regime in Eritrea. The letter further stressed its support for the youth movements to take their responsibility and join the former political organization to speed the fall of the dictatorship and establish a democratic Eritrea where its people enjoy peace, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
A short public discussions on the situation of the political and conscience prisoners where held. Mr. Mehari has responded all the questions regarding how the prisoners are living under inhumane situation in Eira – Ero and other prisons whose number is more than 300. He further expressed that 18th September is only symbol exposing the dictatorial regimes behaviour, this regime has come to power by killings and disappearance of thousands Eritreans during the armed liberation struggle and later after independence.
The second session was a workshop presented by Fesseha Nair chairman of the partnership for democratic change. Mr. Nair represented the workshop under the theme,
Evaluating of the activities and process of partnership in Sweden.”
Mr. Nair presented the workshop by using power point the main points evaluating the process and the working model pursued by the partnership for democratic change in Eritrea, founded since 2009 in Stockholm- Sweden.
The first part of the workshop dealt on the questions to be attended- the results of the partnership what has worked well and what has worked less well and lessons learned after three years of partnership.
The second part was on the working model of the partnership. In this part, he focused on the analysis of current situation of the opposition for democratic change in Sweden in particular and the opposition in general.
The vision and overall gaols of the forces for democratic change, what areas of development needs priority, the method of change and leadership for democratic change.
The third part was analysis of the partnerships strengths and weaknesses. He explained the strengths and weaknesses of the partnership under the following headings:
- How was our undertaking organized
- Were we working in the same direction
- How were the attitudes and values which support the organization
- How were the guidance and support in our activities
- How were resources acquired and maintained
- How were method of working
A discussion session on the workshop
Comments and different constructive views from the audience enriched the workshop contents. In each case the quality of comment and discussion by participants has led to significant revision and improvements in the assessment. Workshop participants focused on the partnerships activities in Sweden, its development in organization identifying its strengths and weaknesses.
They expressed more on the strategy how they can win the Eritrean peoples opinion in Sweden. Finally the workshop resolved to engage the media- TV Eri-Adal and TV Zete- Media strategy for raising democratic awareness of the Eritrean people in diaspora and preparing platform for the youth to engage in public events and enhance democratization among them.
The workshop concluded by taking recommendations from the participants that can help them in their coming activities.
